stucco application process

RAINSCREEN

Whether installing rain-screen or not there is a basic process for preparation for stucco work.

Two layers of 60 minute tar paper or a more modern equivalent such as Typar (my favorite) is applied over the sheathing. Installed in lap over fashion, this part of the process provides moisture protection for the main structure by obliging water and moister to drain out, down and away from the building by gravity. The amount of overlap is determined by code and type of wrap used.

If rain-screen is to be used, it will be either a stapled on rain-screen mat or pressure treated furring strips nailed on at 12" centres. Flashings are installed over doors, windows, pony walls, vents, outlets and between floors. The flashing is fixed to the sheathing under the paper wrap so it provides protection whether rain-screen is to be used or not.
